Spirit Aerosystems announces new aircraft
maintenance facility at Prestwick

SPIRIT AEROSYSTEMS has announced its intention to provide aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul services at its facility at Prestwick, Ayrshire.

The new operation will provide an aircraft maintenance hub for Europe and the Middle East.

The company currently uses its Prestwick facility to manufacture wing parts for Airbus and Boeing planes, as well as other pieces for Hawker Beechcraft aircraft.

The initial scope of work will be focused on repair, overhaul and modification of engine nacelles/thrust reversers for Boeing 737NG and 777 aircraft commencing mid-2008.

The European repair activities will complement Spirit’s Repair Centre in Wichita, Kansas, which has been in operation since 2002, and which continues global support of operators of Spirit nacelles/thrust reverser products.

Spirit AeroSystems’s decision to provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul services from Prestwick secures the jobs of 750 people currently employed there, and could lead to the creation of more posts.

A spokesman for the Kansas-based company said: “This is good for us as a business. As an aerospace business, if you diversify you become more robust.”

Spirit AeroSystems (Europe) Ltd is based at sites in Prestwick, Ayrshire and Samlesbury, Lancashire. The Prestwick site is home to around 750 employees and is one of the larger employers in the local area. An additional 80 staff are based at Samlesbury. The business provides customers in the commercial aerospace market with airframe structures.

Spirit Europe is part of Spirit AeroSystems Inc. based in Wichita, Kansas.

Spirit AeroSystems is the world’s largest independent supplier of large component parts and assemblies for commercial aircraft.
