Provost Sloan said: “The Gaiety Theatre is over a hundred years old, it is one of Scotland’s oldest and most loved theatres. Since the theatre first opened its doors, many talented people have entertained audiences. In particular The Alexander Brothers, Johnny Beattie and Anne Fields, who have all regularly taken to the Gaiety stage, have raised the profile of the theatre. It is astonishing that between them they have been performing for 217 years.

“The theatre receives great support from The Friends of the Gaiety. The group constantly work to raise funds by organising fashion shows, coffee mornings, Scottish gala evenings and many other events, and then donate the proceeds to the Gaiety.

“By working in partnership with members of local communities, voluntary organisations, the Friends of the Gaiety and artists the Council will continue to support the Gaiety Theatre.”

Johnny Beattie, The Alexander Brothers and Anne Fields attended the civic reception, and added their particular sparkle to the occasion.

The Gaiety Theatre has a total of 584 seats on three separate levels that have been used by local people and visitors to the area for over 100 years. There have been a number of changes made to the theatre since it was built including an extension, refurbishment, wheelchair access, infra-red sound system for the hearing impaired, a café bar and studio.

The Gaiety has a varied programme of events planned for this year, and has already made arrangements for a pantomime production later this year.
