John Scott urges Ayrshire businesses to apply for rates relief
John Scott MSP for Ayr has this week urged small businesses in Ayrshire to check if they are eligible to benefit from a package of business rates cuts which come into effect on 1 April.
Mr Scott (pictured above) said: “As a result of the budget passed by the Scottish Parliament earlier this year, and as a result of pressure by Conservative MSPs to have rates relief for small companies included within that budget, more than 10,000 businesses across Ayrshire will now be able to benefit from lower rates bills, and I am encouraging every small company in Ayrshire to make sure that they claim any relief for which they are eligible.
“From 1 April, businesses with a rateable value of less than £8,000 should pay no business rates at all. Businesses valued between £8,001 and £10,000 will be eligible for a 50% rates discount, while those with a rateable value of between £10,001 and £15,000 can have a 25% discount applied.
“Rates relief is not automatic and must be applied for, so if any local business believes that they are entitled to a cut in their rates then I would urge them to contact the Council to ensure that their application is made.
“During the current difficult economic times it is all the more important that small companies make sure that they are taking advantage of all the relief that they are entitled to receive, to help them weather this challenging climate and to safeguard local jobs.”
