South Ayrshire Council wins funding for new Ayr Academy campus

South Ayrshire Council is delighted with this week’s announcement from the Scottish Government offering funding support for the construction cost of a replacement Ayr Academy.

The news is a boost to the Council school estates programme, which already has a successful track record in the Public Private Partnership process of refurbishing and re-developing its school buildings.

The funding is part of the Government’s £1.25 billion school building programme, and will offer two-thirds of the total replacement cost of Ayr Academy.

Councillor Hywel Davies, Lifelong Learning Portfolio Holder at South Ayrshire Council (pictured above) said: “This is a very timely announcement, coming less than a fortnight after we posted some of the best exam and attendance results this authority has enjoyed.

“South Ayrshire Council has a firm and positive commitment to the improvement of the school estate, and to the provision of a complete educational experience for our young people. This was clearly demonstrated earlier this year, with a hugely successful Curriculum for Excellence event, that drew plaudits nationally and featured in the Times Educational Supplement.

“This commitment and approach is clearly bearing fruit, and our share of this funding will go towards the re-development of Ayr Academy, building on the redevelopment of Belmont and Prestwick Academies. To now have the opportunity to develop a third flagship school is extremely exciting, and bodes well for the future of academic excellence in South Ayrshire.”

The council will now consider all options for Ayr Academy, but at this early stage it can confirm that, despite speculation in the local media, Dalmilling Golf Course is not the preferred site for the new building.

A full programme of consultation will be undertaken as options for the school are developed.
