Liberal candidate claims Ayrshire businesses
betrayed by Tory/SNP rates vote

AYRSHIRE businesses are being betrayed by Conservative & SNP actions on rates as some see rates increases of over 200%.

That’s according to the Liberal Democrats Westminster candidate for Ayr, Carrick & Cumnock James Taylor following the decision by the SNP and Conservatives to vote down a Lib Dem motion in the Scottish Parliament which called for business rates increases to be eased.

James Taylor (pictured above) said: “A walk down Ayr Sandgate just shows that local businesses are suffering in the current economic climate. Businesses such as hotels, auction marts, retailers and nurseries are facing huge rates tax bill increases. I know of two town centre shops in Ayr who have to find an extra £500 a month with one seeing a 259% increase in their rates.”

Gus Stewart, a rating partner at Ryden, summed up the mood: “It is strange that at a time when transitional relief would probably have been at its most helpful for those seeing significant increases and ratepayers already struggling in the face of a recession, that it has been removed.

“The Government has publicised the fact that the reduction in the uniform business rate (UBR) will itself cushion the increases, but this is the same uniform business rate as applied in England and it will have a transitional relief scheme.

“Scottish businesses are once again the poor relations.”

James Taylor added: “The Conservatives have been calling for transitional support for auction marts and petrol stations but last week voted against it.

“Indeed Craig Wilson’s mart in Ayr faces a 38% increase which is £17,000 extra per year in real terms.

“Ayrshire businesses who are now looking at crippling increases will feel let down by the Conservatives.

“After 65 years of a red-blue government, people need to vote Liberal Democrat on 6 May if they want to see a real change that works for them.”

James Taylor

CKD Galbraith market superb country property
in desirable Ayrshire location

SCOTLAND’S leading independent property consultancy CKD Galbraith’s Ayr Office is marketing an impressive farmhouse with 6 acres occupying a much sought after location by Stewarton, East Ayrshire.

The original farmhouse was divided in 1999 to create two substantial family homes in excellent order. They could continue in separate use or alternatively be combined to create a single large country house.

In an excellent location, close to the popular town of Stewarton.

In the mid-sixties, Glasgow families began arriving to set up new homes in Stewarton, a wee country toun that most of them had never even heard of previously. However, they came, they saw, and they conquered their apprehension about such a drastic shift. Fortunately, the two factions - the country, parochial Stewartonians and the newcomers - (“thae interlowpers fae Glesca” as they were called) intermingled quite well from the outset. Gradually, as more arrived from Glasgow and elsewhere over a period of ten years or so, it began to dawn on the born-and-bred Stewartonians that their native place would never be the same again.

Mid Williamshaw has been converted and extended to provide an attractive kitchen/dining room, spacious living room, utility, study and cloakroom on the ground floor. There are 3 bedrooms (two en suite) on the first floor. Low Williamshaw is a substantial 3 bedroom farmhouse with a delightful open plan kitchen / dining area, conservatory, living room, study, sauna and shower room, utility and cloakroom on the ground floor. On the first floor there are 3 bedrooms (master en suite) and shower room.

There is an excellent 5 acre paddock, outdoor exercise arena, indoor riding arena, stabling, garaging, tack and feed room, store and hay shed.

This attractive rural property is within easy reach of Glasgow and would be an excellent equestrian property and creates further opportunities for extension and development.

Offers Over £650,000 are being sought.

Paligap helps Donald Ross take advantage of housing market upturn

LEADING Ayrshire estate agents Donald Ross have taken full advantage of the recent revival in the housing market, and enjoyed a very successful first few months of 2010.

Managing director Steven Miller commented: “At Donald Ross we have had our busiest start to the year since 2007, the first quarter looks very good indeed. High quality desirable homes remain in strong demand, which has resulted in healthy competition and numerous closing dates over the last few weeks.”

[Pictured: Paligap business manager Lorna Gibson (left) and Donald Ross managing director Steven Miller.]

Part of this success might be explained by the UK economy emerging from the recession, but part also could be the result of a new marketing campaign, planned and carried out by Ayr-based creative agency Paligap.

Donald Ross initially approached Paligap in June 2009 because they wanted their property brochures to be professionally designed and to showcase their properties to as high a standard as possible.

They also wanted to work with a local company, which they could form a partnership with.

After seeing the quality of Paligap’s design work they also decided to redevelop their website using the same high standard of design to market their properties online.

Their new website was launched in January 2010.

Paligap now handle all Donald Ross market communications including; the design and print of all property schedules, marketing website with integration to their property management system, the design of all press adverts and an audiovisual presentation which is displayed on the Donald Ross premises.

Paligap business manager Lorna Gibson commented: “We always enjoy working with local companies, especially when it’s with one of Ayrshire’s most recognised brands. Donald Ross has great brand heritage and we have done our best to take that forward into these new forms of communication.”

Donald Ross Estate Agents managing director Steven Miller concluded: “As a local independent business, it was of paramount importance to us that we engaged a local company well equipped to deal with all of the various requirements and challenges we face within our business.

“After my initial meeting with Paligap it quickly became clear that Paligap were the only choice. Their creative approach and excellent service has allowed us to deliver unrivalled service to all of our clients.”
