Elite Ayrshire Business Circle to meet at Glasgow Prestwick Airport

AYRSHIRE business people are cordially invited to attend the next meeting of the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle, which will take place at 8am on Thursday 26 August in the Aviator Suite at Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

As well as being another event at which you can network with fellow Ayrshire business leaders, this meeting will also provide an opportunity to meet Iain Cochrane (pictured above), Chief Executive Officer of Glasgow Prestwick Airport and Chief Operating Officer of Infratil Airports Europe with responsibility for operational safety & compliance. Iain will be giving a comprehensive presentation about the Airport and its future plans and prospects.

The Elite Ayrshire Business Circle’s last meeting at the Airport was over two years ago, and obviously there have been fundamental changes in the economic climate since then. It will be interesting to learn how Glasgow Prestwick Airport, a key bellwether of the Ayrshire economy as a whole, is managing to cope with the current downturn in the aviation industry generally.

A buffet breakfast will be provided at the meeting.

The meeting will also include a guided tour of the Airport, and a chance to go air-side, which will provide an opportunity to do some tax-free shopping in the duty-free area. Iain has kindly arranged an additional 10% discount for Circle members and guests, but please note that you will need to bring your passport with you on the day in order to participate in this part of the meeting.

Members, guests and anyone interested in finding out more about the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle will be most welcome to attend this meeting.

But in order to facilitate catering arrangements please advise Murdoch MacDonald whether or not you will be able to attend. Telephone 01292 281498 or e-mail

UWS calls ‘Action!’ on innovative new
contemporary screen acting degree

University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has introduced an exciting new BA (Hons) Contemporary Screen Acting degree which gets underway this September.

[Pictured: Top comedy director Michael Hines from ‘Still Game’ and ‘Chewing The Fat’.]

The degree has been custom-designed for students who have completed an HND in Acting & Performance or equivalent, and wish to pursue a career in screen acting. Students will extend and practise acting skills already learned, while developing new skills in acting for the screen, and learning how to market those skills on the web.

The Honours degree will be taught over two years at the University’s Ayr Campus, and will specifically focus on teaching screen actors how to work with new web-based digital technologies. Students will learn how to act with Green Screen and Chroma Key programmes in the UWS Television Studios, and deliver screen acting content for real commercial websites.

BA (Hons) Contemporary Screen Acting Programme Leader, Stuart Hepburn has written and acted in many popular TV programmes such as Taggart, Rebus and Monarch of the Glen.

Commenting on the course he said: “We live in a world dominated by the internet and multiplatform delivery. The new degree is based around the belief that the modern screen actor has to be able to manipulate and use the new digital technologies creatively to pursue their careers. We will be teaching actors how to devise, create and act in web-based drama in a commercial setting.”

This course will see a wide range of industry input. This will include top comedy director Michael Hines (pictured above) from ‘Still Game’ and ‘Chewing The Fat’ who will lecture on the Screen Drama and Acting Techniques modules. Expert input will also include visiting professional creative industry practitioners in acting, sound, lighting, camera operating and film making.

Commenting on the course Michael Hines said: “I'm genuinely excited at the potential this course has in training up prospective actors. This is a unique opportunity for students to work with virtual sets, experienced practitioners and seasoned professionals, and both students and Scotland's creative industries will benefit enormously!”

For more information on University of the West of Scotland’s BA (Hons) Contemporary Screen Acting degree please call University Direct, the University’s information service, on 0800 027 1000 or visit the University’s Clearing website,

Ayr Racecourse offers Ladies Night of glamour, fun and music

By: Iain Ferguson

IT'S one of the most glamorous nights of the year in the Scottish social calendar – Champagne GH Mumm Ladies Night at Ayr Racecourse.

And this year’s extravaganza on Saturday 7 August promises to be the best ever with a night full of fun, racing and fabulous entertainment.

A crowd of around 8000 people will head to the course with the gates opening at 3.40pm, the first race at 5.40pm and three hours of unforgettable music and dancing from around 8.40pm until approximately 11.40pm.

Glamorous ladies wearing dazzling dresses and fabulous hats mingle with men in trendy suits and there is a great atmosphere as the racing comes under starter’s orders for the night with everyone desperate to back a winner.

The sumptuous champagne gardens at the track are transformed into a sea of colour and cheers go up as the winners cross the winning line.

And for some ladies the evening will become even better. There are judges circulating who will award bronze coins – a passport to Ladies Day Final on Friday 17 September – to the best dressed ladies on the night.

Prizes that day are simply superb – for the third year running Kerr & Smith / Iveco Trucks have sponsored the star prize which this year is a stunning Vauxhall NEW Astra 5-door 1.4 Turbo. Runner-up prize is a Norwegian cruise courtesy of Stewart Travel and third prizes is a piece of jewellery from designer Alex Cairncross.

Everyone who has won a bronze coin by Ladies Day will draw the name of a horse running in the big race that day – the William Hill (Ayr) Bronze Cup. The lady who has the winning horse wins the car and the second and third placed pick up the other top prizes.

The fun doesn’t end with the last race on Ladies Night – there is superb entertainment with top tribute act Take That 2 (pictured above) performing hits like “Relight My Fire”, “Greatest Day” and “Rule The World” in the Ayrshire Suite while a top DJ will play in the Horseshoe Bar.

For more information or to book a ticket for Champagne GH Mumm Ladies Night call 01292-264179 or go online at
