Tom Lehman takes Turnberry time out to promote Troon Junior Open

US golfing legend Tom Lehman took time out from practice day at Turnberry ahead of The Senior Open Championship to encourage young golfers to sign up for the 2012 Troon Junior Open for the Tom Lehman Trophies.

Organised by South Ayrshire Council’s Golf South Ayrshire and Buzzworks, the 2012 Troon Junior Open will be played over the Darley, Fullarton and Lochgreen courses in Troon on Tuesday 7 August.

And – with top golf prizes worth £2,500 on offer – it’s one not to be missed!

Tom helped establish the competition, which is recognised as one of the top events for young golfers in the UK, after playing the Open Championship at Royal Troon in 1997 and donating a sum of money for junior golf.

Open to golfers under 18 years of age on 1 January 2012, this superb one-day tournament offers both scratch and handicap prizes including the Tom Lehman Trophies – two replica silver claret jugs – for the boy and girl with the lowest scratch score.

These fantastic claret jugs joined Tom at Turnberry, who said: “It’s great to be back in Scotland and I’m very proud to have my name associated with junior golf through the competition at Troon.

“Competitions like the Troon Junior Open are a terrific starting ground for young golfers and give you the chance to become a better player and a better person – and even to win these wonderful silver claret jugs.

“This is the first opportunity I’ve had to see them in person and it’s easy to see why any young golfer would want to compete for them. I hope all juniors who love golf and love to compete take the opportunity to enter the Troon Junior Open and I’ll be keeping an eye out to see who wins!”

Delighted to be joining Tom were two of this year’s Troon Junior Open entrants Lauren Gilbert, aged 14, from Largs Golf Club and Andrew Gordon, aged 13, from Belleisle Juniors Golf Club.

Lauren Gilbert said: “I played in the Tom Lehman competition last year and when I got a chance from South West Ayrshire to come and meet Tom Lehman in person it was a great pleasure to accept the invitation.  As we have always held Tom Lehman as one of the greatest golfers we only hope that he does well at the British Seniors this year.”

Andrew Gordon said: “I watch Tom Lehman on television many times so it is fantastic to meet him today in person. My friends and I are all looking forward to playing in the Junior competition at Troon, which is named after him, and I hope he plays well at Turnberry this week.”

Also lending her support to the Troon Junior Open was South Ayrshire Provost Helen Moonie, who will present the Tom Lehman trophies to the winners on 7 August.

Provost Moonie said: “We pride ourselves on being the home of Open Golf and it’s wonderful that as we host the Senior Open Championship for the eighth time over the last 25 years – a record seventh time at Turnberry – Tom is taking the time to encourage the next generation of golfers to take part in the Troon Junior Open.

“I hope young golfers the length and breadth of the country take Tom’s comments on board and come along and take part in what is sure to be a terrific day of golf in Troon.”

Buzzworks director Kenny Blair, added: “As a local company with golf very close to our heart, we are excited to hear Tom encourage entrants for his namesake tournament. It’s a great event that gives you a chance to show what you’re made of, so come along and help make the 2012 Tom Lehman tournament the best ever.”

Entry to the 2012 Troon Junior Open is only £5, which includes a free packed lunch and goody bag.
