Bumper entry for Scottish Grand National at Ayr Racecourse

By: Iain Ferguson

CORAL Welsh Grand National winner Mountainous is one of 88 entries for this year’s Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr Racecourse on 12 April.

And the Richard Lee trained horse is joined at the entry stage by some big names including Tidal Bay from the Paul Nicholls yard and Cheltenham cross country hero Balthazar King, but both are more likely to run in the Crabbie’s Grand National at Aintree.

Other entries include last year’s winner Godsmejudge, the  2012 Coral Welsh Grand National winner Monbeg Dude and four from the Lucinda Russell yard  – Green Flag, Kris Kross, Nuts N Bolts and Lie Forrit who won over hurdles at Kelso last Saturday. Another Scottish entry is Scotswell trained by Harriet Graham in the Borders.

Penrith based Nicky Richards holds entries with last year’s third Mister Marker, And The Man and Tutchec.

Race sponsors Coral have installed the Harry Fry trained Mendip Express (pictured above) as 8/1 favourite, with three horses on 14/1 - Many Clouds, trained by Oliver Sherwood,  Green Flag, and Phillip Hobbs Roalo de Farges.

The QTS Scottish  Champion Hurdle, the main supporting race on the card,   has attracted 55 entries including the second and third in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham earlier this month – My Tent Or Yours (Nicky Henderson) and The New One (Nigel Twiston-Davies).

Early indications are that Nicky Henderson will send My Tent Or Yours (pictured above) to Ayr in preference to Punchestown where he would clash with his Champion Hurdle conqueror Jezki.

The classy Irving from the Paul Nicholls yard, last year’s Evan Williams trained winner Court Minstrel and the talented Cockney Sparrow from John Quinn’s North Yorkshire yard are other possible runners.

And there are five entries from the all-conquering  Willie Mullins stable  – Un de Sceaux, Arctic Fire, Wicklow Brave, Upsie and Midnight Game.

Tickets for the two day Coral Scottish Grand National Festival on April 11 and April 12 are selling fast and its recommended racegoers book early to avoid disappointment. Call 01292 264179 or go online at
