Smashing way to start Lochside’s masterplan!

South Ayrshire Council’s masterplan for the Lochside in Ayr, designed to provide 58 new, socially affordable homes and new landscaping, literally got off to a smashing start this week as the demolition of the old maisonettes on Ferguson Street got underway.

The multi-million pound masterplan to build the new homes and landscape the area was heavily influenced by local opinion, with consultation and open days in 2013 encouraging residents in the area to make their views known.

Work to strip the interior of the maisonettes is already underway and the exterior shells of the buildings will be flattened in the weeks ahead and it is anticipated the first of the 58 new homes will be completed and available to new tenants by spring 2015.

To formally mark the new dawn for Lochside – and the demolition of the maisonettes – Councillor Philip Saxton, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Customer Services rolled up his sleeves and knocked down the first bricks.

Councillor Saxton said: “We are investing in Lochside as part of our commitment to enhancing and improving the local area.

“When the maisonettes were built, they were much needed, but no longer meet the quality or standards we expect for our tenants today.

“I’m delighted to see the dream we have for this area fast becoming a reality and this demolition will open out the space around Ferguson Street, which will be landscaped, as we work to build 58 new socially affordable houses nearby.

“These superb new homes will be a mix of flats, bungalows and cottages, and will offer high-quality, modern homes for tenants in a spacious and vibrant new area which will completely transform this corner of Lochside.”

Councillor Saxton continued: "This has been a much anticipated moment for this very exciting project, which is a positive result for the whole Lochside community and I’m delighted the development has been informed by strong local feedback.

He concluded: “Today is a great day for Lochside and I'd like to thank local people for their continued commitment to the regeneration of this area.

“Their patience will soon be rewarded as this ambitious vision to redevelop the area takes a big leap forwards and we see a stunning new future for Lochside emerge.”
