Big prize money on offer at Ayr Racecourse

By: Iain Ferguson

THE biggest and richest Flat race meeting of the year in Scotland - the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup Festival runs from next Thursday 18 September until Saturday 20 September at Ayr Racecourse.

With more than £600,000 in prize-money on offer, the sport’s top horses, trainers and jockeys will head to the coast for a terrific feast of racing.

Highlight is the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday, with a field of 27 runners set to go to post for the £160,000 race which last year saw Highland Colori win in the hands of young riding sensation Oisin Murphy.

The horse is entered again this year, but the quick going is likely to be against this mud lover, and his Scottish born owner Evan Sutherland has two more entries in Highland Acclaim and Out Do.

No Scottish trained horse has won the race since Roman Warrior back in 1975, and Jim Goldie could have two runners in Jack Dexter, third in the race last year, and Hawkeythenoo.

The Saturday card also features The William Hill 80th Anniversary Book Launch Doonside Cup, a Listed Race with £60,000 in prize-money, The William Hill Firth of Clyde Stakes and the William Hill Ayr Silver Cup.

Thursday’s feature is the William Hill Handicap for the Kilkerran Cup, while Friday, which is also Ladies Day, sees the running of the William Hill Ayr Bronze Cup and the Ebf Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes.

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend over the three days, and for more information on the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup Festival call 01292 264179 or go online at

Miss Scotland to help Robbie Savage with William Hill Ayr Gold Cup draw

By: Iain Ferguson

Miss Scotland Ellie McKeating has a special date with footballer turned television pundit Robbie Savage next week.

Ellie and Robbie will make the draw for Scotland’s richest flat race - the £160,000 William Hill Ayr Gold Cup at Ayr Racecourse.

The draw takes place on Referendum Day 18 September, which is also the opening day of the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup Festival, and the race itself is run on Saturday 20 September in front of packed stands.

There are 27 horses in the race, and, once Ellie or Robbie draws their name out of a drum, their trainer or representative will then decide which stall they will run from.

David Brown, Managing Director of Ayr Racecourse said: “It is a huge boost that we have Ellie joining Robbie at this year’s draw. We were delighted to welcome Ellie to the Scottish Sun Raceday in June, and I’m glad she is returning for the Gold Cup draw.

“Robbie was here for two days at last year’s Festival, and proved popular with the crowds.”

The Gold Cup draw is screened lived on dedicated horse racing channel Racing UK, and is an integral part of the Festival which also includes Ladies Day on the Friday, which will see one lucky lady win a fabulous Vauxhall Adam Glam 1.4 courtesy of Kerr & Smith.

More than 20,000 people from all over the UK and Ireland will descend on the course for the Festival, where total prize money tops £600,000. Channel 4 screens four races live from the track on the Saturday.
