A SOAP BOX Grand Prix will feature as one of the main events during the 23–24 August Bank Holiday Weekend when the National Trust for Scotland’s five-star property Culzean Castle in Ayrshire will host the 1st international heritage vehicle gathering - the Culzean Autoclassica.

After a successful trial at the Autoclassica launch in September 2007, the Soap Box Grand Prix promises to be a great spectator attraction with trial runs being held on the Saturday and the competition runs on Sunday.

To celebrate the association with the race days of the 1950s at the disused Turnberry airfield nearby, many of the single vehicle and club entrants will be dressed in the appropriate apparel to reflect the age of their vehicle.

For entrants with post-1970’s vehicles they will be asked to arrive in period dress of the 40s to 60s.

Visitors to the event are also being invited to join in with the retro theme and help create a surreal spectacle that will be unique to a classic vehicle gathering in Scotland.

Entrants and exhibitors already lined up for the event include “The Caledonian Classic & Historic Motor Sports Club” with demonstration runs as part of their Scottish championship weekend events, and “The Sporting Bears,” a UK-wide charity group of motoring enthusiasts who will be hosting a Teddy Bears Picnic. [CLICK ON ANY IMAGE TO VIEW / DOWNLOAD FULL-SIZE VERSION]

Organised by Autospirit in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland, the first Culzean Autoclassica will take place on Bank Holiday weekend 23-24 August 2008 at Culzean Castle & Country Park.

One of Scotland’s five-star international tourist attractions, the grandeur of the castle and spectacular scenery makes it an inspired choice of venue.

Early forecasts indicate that the first Culzean Autoclassica weekend will be one of the top heritage motoring events in the country, with clubs and owners of vehicles from throughout the UK and Ireland already applying to attend.

Aimed at all marques of transport with particular emphasis towards top or significant marques, the Autoclassica not only features the history of the automobile and motorcycle, but also its associated lifestyle and service-related industries.

It revisits the golden ages of motoring by bringing together on display some of the finest and exotic vehicles in the country that embrace almost a century of motorised transport.

All forms of vehicles will be on display around the castle and estate grounds throughout the weekend, and by inviting all participants and the visiting public to arrive in period dress reflecting the eras of the vehicles present, a surreal atmosphere will be created.

Activities and attractions will include heritage racing and special marque displays, international and street concours d’elegance, classic and auto memorabilia displays, club and single entry enclosures, manufacturers and dealers enclosures, trade village, classic vehicle auctions, fashion shows, hog roast barbecues and live music.

Action events will include a Soap Box Grand Prix, an inter-club driving challenge, and motoring nostalgia with historic racing car demonstration runs, all to be held within the estate grounds.

Other park facilities include a visitors’ centre, shops, restaurants, gardens, children’s play area, deer park and castle with spectacular views over the Firth of Clyde to Arran and Kintyre.

To encourage participation from both manufacturers and dealers, a selection of events will take place both before and after the weekend. These include the Culzean Autoclassica Golf Classic played round the Westin Turnberry Ailsa Championship course, possible historic and modern vehicle demonstration runs at the old Turnberry circuit and scenic drives around the Ayrshire countryside and coastline.

Scotland’s motor racing heritage parades
at Culzean Autoclassica this weekend

THE launch of the new classic car event the Culzean Autoclassica at Culzean Castle, Ayrshire this weekend, 22-23 September, will feature a nostalgic return to 55 years ago, when the old wartime airfield at Turnberry played host to the prestigious National Trophy and Formula Libra races.

In 1952 Turnberry became just one of two venues ever to host races with Grand Prix team cars entered. Numerous top named drivers were among the entry lists, including Stirling Moss, Ken Wharton and Reg Parnell driving such cars as two legendary BRM V16s and the Famous Thinwall Special Ferrari driven by Mike Hawthorn.

Also present was another great name in motor racing the Scottish Ecurie Ecosse team, mostly consisting of Scottish drivers brought together by former Grand Prix driver David Murray who primarily raced “C” Type & “D” Type Jaguar sports cars out of Merchiston Mews in Edinburgh.

They famously won the Le Mans 24hrs race two years running in 1956-57 with the Jaguar “D” Types. Among the drivers who raced for Ecurie Ecosse were Jimmy Stewart, Ivor Bueb and Ron Flockhart.

A planned special photo-shoot at the old Turnberry race circuit this weekend will hopefully recapture the memories of many who attended the races in the 50s.

To celebrate this local racing heritage, the Culzean Autoclassica launch hopes to feature on display a F1 Race car (Jordan Honda EJ12 - pictured below, and also underneath the first paragraph of this article) and a Le Mans 24hrs Race car (Rafanelli - Riley & Scott Mark 111 - pictured above) in addition to many prestigious Sports and GT classics, historic saloons and tourers. All will be on display around the castle forecourts and the Visitor Centre at Culzean.

Members of the public are invited to attend the launch at Culzean Castle on Sunday 23 September from 10am to 5pm and sample a preview of some of the attractions that are being planned for the first Culzean Autoclassica proper in 2008. As with the main event, the launch will attempt to capture both the Turnberry heritage and the castle’s unique ambience and magnificent location by adopting a traditional theme. Participants and members of the public are invited to enter into the Autoclassica spirit by arriving in period costume reflecting their particular era of transport or the fifties and sixties. Prizes will be awarded for the best turned out.

Coupled with all the usual Culzean Castle and Country Park attractions available, the Culzean Autoclassica promises to be a great day out for all the family.

For more information on admission to the launch event, please visit the Culzean Autoclassica website www.culzeanautoclassica.com

Owners of historic, vintage, classic, racing, sports and touring cars and bikes and prestigious sports performance cars have all been invited to participate, and clubs representing any of the above categories will be especially welcome.

Invitations have also been extended to vintage commercial and tractor vehicle owners, and to capture the castle’s unique ambience and its magnificent location, the event will adopt a traditional theme where participants will be invited to enter into the Autoclassica spirit by arriving in period costume reflecting their particular era of transport.

Legendary motoring historian and motor sports presenter Graham Robson will be the commentator for this year’s launch of the Autoclassica. A recognized authority on many aspects of classic cars and motoring, he is a prolific author, having more than 130 published books to his credit with another four publications due to be completed this year.

Organisers Autospirit Ltd in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland who are holding the event, have intimated that interest has been generated worldwide via their ever expanding website, and articles regarding the launch event are currently being published in countries as far apart as America and China.

The event will be open to the general public on Sunday 23 September with a wide variety of activities, including a street concours d’elegance, special marque displays, club enclosures and trade village, live music, a fashion show, and not forgetting the magnificent Culzean Castle and country park itself, which was recently awarded a five-star rating by Visit Scotland.

The award has been announced by the National Trust for Scotland, who said Culzean is their most visited property. The report states: "The visitor experience is excellent with a wide range of attractions and facilities to ensure an enjoyable day out." It also praises the friendliness of staff and highlights how much there is to see and do at Culzean.

Autospirit Ltd. and the National Trust for Scotland have also teamed up with the nearby five-star Westin Turnberry Hotel to provide accommodation packages for launch visitors, which include as an option on Friday 21 September, a limited number of spaces for a round of golf on the famous Ailsa championship course, venue for the British Open in 2009. This is intended to give a flavour of the planned Culzean Autoclassica Classic golf tournament which will form part of the first Culzean Autoclassica in 2008, and is a marvellous opportunity to play one of the worlds finest golf courses.

About the organisers - Autospirit Ltd

Autospirit is a new company formed bringing together a specialist management team who have been involved in the marketing and the presentation of car events for over twenty years. They include well-known names from event management, motor clubs and motor racing.

The principals of the business have a passion for all things automotive combined with a commercial awareness derived from many years in business in their own right.

Tony Flint, a retired Ayrshire businessman with a lifelong passionate involvement in motorsport, high performance sports and classic cars and representing manufacturers and clubs, founded Autospirit. Tony has many successful years organizing international Porsche events at venues such as the late Princess Diana’s home Althorp House. Amongst his many other interests he had been planning a major event down in England when he was approached through mutual friend Norman Geddes, senior partner at Ayr-based Frazer Coogans Solicitors, and by Mike Schafer, the National Trust for Scotland’s Culzean Castle manager. Mike, an avid Porsche enthusiast asked him if he would consider organising a motoring event at Culzean Castle Country Park.

Excited by the huge potential The Culzean Autoclassica would have, the name that was to become adopted for the event, Tony had no hesitation in enlisting the help of long time friend and fellow Marcos owner and car enthusiast Les Hannah. Les has a successful record as a major event organizer and was production director of the locally held International Guitar Festival. The company Autospirit was registered with Les as a director, and in partnership with Mike Schafer of the National Trust for Scotland they began planning an event destined to be different than anything ever hosted in Scotland.

Tony and Les recognised Culzean Castle was a five-star venue, however immediately noted it was not the only Ayrshire venue with similar status in the locality. The Westin Turnberry Hotel with its famous Turnberry golf courses on the doorstep could provide five-star international hotel accommodation and facilities for their high profile event. The added bonus was that the Westin Turnberry owns what remains of the old Turnberry Race Track, completing the dream scenario Tony and Les had planned for the Culzean Autoclassica, to celebrate Turnberry as being the only Scottish track to host a race in which a Formula One team had competed.

The Westin Turnberry Hotel reacted favourably to becoming involved with the Culzean Autoclassica and the exciting prospect of those GP cars appearing again at the old Turnberry racetrack will become an integral part of the event.

Early additions to the event team include Maserati owner and enthusiast Norman Geddes. Norman will provide an all-important link with local Ayrshire businesses. Others in the team include Robin Donovan, fourteen times Le Mans driver and corporate event and sponsorship expert and Fred Hampton, ex-chairman of Porsche Club Great Britain and a recognized classic and sports car display guru.

Tony has approached other friends and associates from the world of motor racing and journalism, and indications are we can expect one or two more very well known and respected names joining Team Autoclassica.
