Elite Ayrshire Business Circle / Clydesdale Bank
Golf Day raises £10,500 for Ayrshire Hospice

THE first annual Elite Ayrshire Business Circle / Clydesdale Bank Charity Golf Day was held at Belleisle Golf Course on Tuesday 17 June followed by a Dinner and Race Night in the Princess Royal Exhibition, Banqueting & Conference Centre at Ayr Racecourse.

More than 100 golfers from the Ayrshire business world took part in a 3-ball golf tournament during the day, and 144 people attended the Dinner and Race Night in the evening.

The twin events were held to benefit the Ayrshire Hospice, and a cheque for £10,500 was presented to Ayrshire Hospice Fundraising Manager Louis Jardine.

Elite Ayrshire Business Circle executive chairman Norman Geddes commented: "Thanks to the marvellous support received from our members, their guests and the sponsors we have been able to raise this magnificent sum for the Ayrshire Hospice. This is an outstanding result for a first-time event, and is a tribute to the generosity of the Ayrshire business community. We look forward to building on this success in future years to increase our support for such a worthy cause."

Elite Ayrshire Business Circle managing director Murdoch MacDonald said: “All of us in the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle were delighted to join with our friends in the Clydesdale Bank to host this inaugural Golf Day, which because of its initial success will now become a regular annual event.

“Since fundraising for the Ayrshire Hospice first started nearly 25 years ago, it has become a cause very dear to the hearts of local people and businesses alike. We are therefore pleased that all funds raised by today’s events will go to benefit a local charity that is worthwhile by anybody’s standards.

“I have been gratified by the success and growth of the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle in this its first year, and now look forward to many more Ayrshire companies joining us in the months and years to come.”

Clydesdale Bank Financial Solutions Centre managing partner Willie Mackie said: “Clydesdale Bank were delighted to be involved with the inaugural Elite Ayrshire Business Circle Golf Day. To raise in excess of £10k for the Hospice was a real credit to all the people involved, and I am sure that this event will now feature on an annual basis.”

Ayrshire Hospice Fundraising Manager Louis Jardine said: “The Ayrshire Hospice is delighted that the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle and the Clydesdale Bank chose the Hospice to benefit from their inaugural Golf Day and Dinner. The weather conditions did nothing to detract from the enjoyment of our day’s golf and the event was perfectly rounded off by the evening’s entertainment at the Ayr Racecourse Princess Royal Suite. Special thanks to David Jellema whose drive and enthusiasm led to the superb sum of £10,500 being presented to support the work of the Hospice – we look forward to our continued partnership at next year’s tournament.”

Elite Ayrshire Business Circle high fliers at Glasgow Prestwick Airport

THE Elite Ayrshire Business Circle members and their guests assembled at Glasgow Prestwick Airport for the Circle’s latest meeting at 8am on Friday 30 May.

[Pictured: Elite Ayrshire Business Circle executive chairman Norman Geddes (centre) welcomes Clydesdale Bank Financial Solutions Centre managing partner Willie Mackie, left, and South Ayrshire Council Provost Winifred Sloan, right. CLICK ON ANY IMAGE TO VIEW / DOWNLOAD FULL-SIZE VERSION]

They were treated to a fascinating presentation by Glasgow Prestwick Airport chief executive Mark Rodwell (pictured below), which highlighted the airport’s importance as a major hub of the local and Scottish economies.

The presentation was followed by a tour of the airport, which included several of the parts that everyday passengers do not reach.

Guests at the meeting included John Scott, MSP for Ayr, several leading local politicians from both South and East Ayrshire Councils, and many prominent entrepreneurs and business people either located in or with a business interest in Ayrshire.

As is the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle custom, they were each afforded the opportunity of giving a brief presentation about their own organisation to the assembled membership.

[Pictured: five of the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle's stalwart founder members: Clydesdale Bank Financial Solutions Centre managing partner Willie Mackie; Andrew Sinclair, Sinclair Scott Chartered Accountants; Graeme Ferguson, Kestrel Press Ltd; Bill Inglis, PALIGAP Creative Marketing Agency; and Stephen Wilkie, Sinclair Scott Chartered Accountants.]

Elite Ayrshire Business Circle managing director Murdoch MacDonald said: “We are all very grateful to Mark Rodwell and his team for arranging and running such an enjoyable and illuminating morning’s visit.

“The quiet efficiency with which Glasgow Prestwick Airport is run sometimes tends to disguise what a complex operation it is.

“It’s success is inextricably intertwined with that of Ayrshire’s economy as a whole, and it is undoubtedly one of Ayrshire business’s most valuable assets.

“I would also like to thank John Scott MSP for Ayr and South Ayrshire Council Provost Winifred Sloan for their continuing support, as well as our other guests from the worlds of politics and business who were joining us today for the first time.

"In particular, Provost Stephanie Young (pictured below) and Councillor Tom Cook of East Ayrshire Council, who both gave us a valuable update on current developments in their area, notably the ongoing regeneration of Kilmarnock town centre."

Elite Ayrshire Business Circle executive chairman Norman Geddes said: “Today we enjoyed another record attendance. The Circle is proving to be very popular with local businesses who see it as a unique way to enhance their business profile and to network with like-minded business people.

“Our very popular websites provide the unique capability to quickly disseminate business information on the Internet, and are designed to enhance search engine rankings of all participants.

“We are delighted by the interest in the Circle which has been shown by the local Councils and politicians, and hope that with economic development now devolved to local government, we can rapidly develop this relationship further to our mutual advantage, and, more importantly, to the greater benefit of the Ayrshire economy as a whole.”

Murdoch MacDonald tables vote of thanks
to Magdalene College Cambridge

AYRSHIRE public relations consultant Murdoch MacDonald recently returned to his alma mater - Magdalene College, Cambridge University - forty years after he graduated there.

[Pictured: Magdalene College, Cambridge University, view from the Pepys Library building. CLICK ON ANY IMAGE TO VIEW / DOWNLOAD FULL-SIZE VERSION]

Murdoch was accompanied by John Quinton, chairman, and Sandy Cunningham, managing director respectively of one of his PR client companies, building contractors William Skinner & Son, based at St Quivox on the perimeter of Glasgow Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire.

[Pictured: First Court, Magdalene College, Cambridge University.]

The purpose of the visit was to present to Magdalene College a dining table to mark and celebrate the official opening of William Skinner & Son’s new Southern Office in Meldreth near Cambridge.

[Pictured: Magdalene College from the River Cam.]

Managing director of PR firm Fame Publicity Services Murdoch MacDonald said: “Forty years ago this week I was just starting my last term at Magdalene College. In spite of the passage of time, my memories of that period remain forever fresh, as it was a very special time, and one for which I am grateful to the College and to the people in it.

“So I was glad of the opportunity to mark my appreciation in a small way.

“Working in the field of public relations, one of my favourite clients in recent years has been William Skinner & Son, a company (like Magdalene) firmly rooted in traditional virtues and values, but also one that is (like Magdalene) enterprising, innovative and forward-looking.

“When Skinners asked me to come up with an idea of a way in which to mark the opening of their new Southern Office premises, I suggested that they should craft a piece of traditional furniture for Magdalene, and I hope that the result is acceptable to the Master and the Fellows.”

[Pictured at the table presentation, left to right: Reverend James Rigney, Chaplain of Magdalene College and Director of Studies in Theology and Religious Studies: William Skinner & Son chairman John Quinton and managing director Sandy Cunningham; Magdalene College Domus Bursar Peter Daybell; Master of Magdalene College Duncan Robinson; Dr Carl Watkins, Joint Director of Studies and University Lecturer in History; and Fame Publicity Services and Elite Ayrshire Business Circle managing director Murdoch MacDonald.]

William Skinner & Son’s chairman John Quinton said: “The design is a double drop leaf gate leg with tapered legs and a narrow centre section, to minimise the space needed for storage. The colour of the table is Jacobean oak and it is finished with beeswax.”

The table was crafted out of oak by traditional methods in William Skinner & Son’s joinery workshops in Ayrshire and Cambridge. It will be housed in a private dining room adjacent to the Fellows’ Combination Room at Magdalene College.

Master of Magdalene College Duncan Robinson said: “We are extremely grateful to William Skinner & Son for making a table which will, I am sure, stand the test of time, and to Murdoch for his initiative in arranging this presentation.”

Willian Skinner & Son managing director Sandy Cunningham concluded: “We are delighted to present this hand-crafted oak dining table to the Master and Fellows of Magdalene College in order to mark the opening of our new Southern Office premises near Cambridge.

“William Skinner & Son is now expanding satisfactorily on all fronts from our headquarters in Ayrshire and our new base in south-east England. We are traditional building contractors who have developed a diverse range of untraditional new skills, and we want potential clients in England and in Scotland to be aware of the comprehensive building skills and experience that we offer.”

Elite Ayrshire Business Circle members
and guests discuss the Budget

THE latest meeting of the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle took place at 8.30am on Friday 14 March 2008 in the board room of the Clydesdale Bank Financial Solutions Centre in Alloway Street, Ayr.

Guests at the meeting included John Scott, MSP for Ayr, South Ayrshire Council Provost Winifred Sloan and deputy leader Margaret Toner, Glasgow Prestwick Airport chief executive Mark Rodwell, and local newspaper Ayrshire Extra editor John Matthews.

Members and guests heard an expert and entertaining analysis by Andrew Sinclair (pictured above) of Sinclair Scott Chartered Accountants about the implications both for individuals and for businesses of Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling’s first Budget, which had been presented to Parliament two days earlier on Wednesday 12 March 2008.

Andrew’s presentation was followed by a comprehensive overview of likely future trends in interest rates, commodity prices and inflation given by Neil Wilson of the Clydesdale Bank’s Treasury Department.

Elite Ayrshire Business Circle managing director Murdoch MacDonald commented: “It was gratifying that once again so many members and our distinguished guests managed to find time to attend our latest meeting. I think this shows that key Ayrshire businesses are enthusiastic in pursuing our stated mission to celebrate entrepreneurial excellence in Ayrshire and to present a united shop window to the world.”

Fame Publicity gets business stories
speedy top search engine ranking

TOP public relations consultancy Fame Publicity Services says it can get clients’ business news stories onto the top page of leading search engines in double quick time - often in a couple of hours.

Murdoch MacDonald set up Fame Publicity in 2003 having spent 30 years in the public relations profession, and he has been dubbed by one leading newspaper as the grandfather of the PR industry in Scotland.

Murdoch claims that the days of companies having to wait for their latest news to appear in newspapers or trade magazines are over. “In our 24-hour news culture, businesses want instant results, and this is what Fame Publicity can give them.

“In Scotland, outside Edinburgh and Glasgow, even successful businesses can find it difficult to get the press publicity that their achievements deserve and need - if success is to breed success, then that success requires to be reported and broadcast as widely and as quickly as possible.

“That is why here at Fame Publicity we have begun to turn the emphasis of our activities away from the traditional media and towards the Internet. We still issue and distribute conventional press releases on behalf of our clients, but the bulk of our effort goes into getting them instant exposure online.”

This doesn’t mean posting the business news story on the company’s own website, which is unlikely to have any significant effect. What Fame Publicity does is to use well tried and tested techniques to get the story on the top page of Google and other major search engines, where it cannot fail to be seen by the company’s potential customers.

And speed is of the essence. Fame Publicity aims to achieve the desired results within 24 hours, often in a couple of hours.

Not surprisingly, Murdoch MacDonald is unwilling to divulge exactly what these techniques are. There is no magic formula, he says. The armoury of techniques has been gradually and painstakingly assembled over a number of years, and will continue to develop in parallel with the sophistication of search engines and the Internet itself.

The cost is not excessive, even compared with conventional PR aimed at the traditional media. Fame is currently offering its Internet-oriented service plus distribution to the traditional media for £295 (US$595), less than other PR companies charge for putting out press releases just to press, TV and radio.

Murdoch MacDonald has been in the public relations industry and a freelance journalist and broadcaster for more than thirty years, working for clients including Royal Bank of Scotland, Standard Life, Scottish Amicable, Scottish Provident, John Menzies, Kwik-Fit, Highland Regional Council, Barratt Homes and Scottish & Universal Newspapers, part of the Trinity Mirror Group.

A graduate of Magdalene College, University of Cambridge, Murdoch is no newcomer either to the allied professions of freelance journalism and broadcasting.

At the start of his career, for 18 months he produced, edited and presented a family finance radio programme called £s, Pence and Sense for Radio Forth, the independent local radio station serving Edinburgh and East Central Scotland, and also made contributions of a similar nature to BBC Radio Scotland.

Subsequently he was the roving reporter in a six-part series of a television financial advice programme called Moneywise, produced and networked throughout the UK by Scottish Television.

For several years, he also wrote his own regular monthly by-lined full-page article for Business Scotland magazine, at that time the best-known and most prestigious business periodical in Scotland. He took over the feature page previously written by Magnus Magnusson, who went on to present Mastermind on BBC Television.
