Who needs Trinity Mirror when you’ve got Fame?

TRINITY MIRROR’S local weekly Ayrshire newspapers the Ayrshire Post, Kilmarnock Standard and Irvine Herald have further reduced their business coverage, taken what little remains in-house, and dispensed with the services of former freelance business editor Murdoch MacDonald.

However, Ayr-based Murdoch is unlikely to find himself under-employed.

Already the proprietor of an innovative PR business Fame Publicity Services, last year Murdoch helped to set up the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle, an association of some of the top local companies.

And the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle has stepped into the breach left by Trinity Mirror by providing up-to-the-minute comprehensive news and feature coverage for Ayrshire businesses on its website Ayrshire Scotland Business News, which Murdoch edits.

And if that wasn’t enough, a book written by Murdoch and his wife Lilian (pictured above has recently been adopted by a major American university, the Alliant International based in California, as a set text for its doctoral psychology students. “Phoenix in a Bottle”, available from the publishers Melrose Books and on Amazon, is an account of Murdoch and Lilian’s struggle with and recovery from alcoholism.

Dr. Gary W. Lawson (pictured above) is Professor of Psychology at Alliant International University. He says: “I adopted ‘Phoenix in a Bottle’ because the dilemma this couple struggled with and the questions they ask themselves are like so many others I have encountered in 35 years of clinical experience treating addictions.

“However, nowhere in addiction literature have I seen these issues examined and explained as well as Lilian and Murdoch do in “Phoenix in a Bottle”.

“I also recommend ‘Phoenix in a Bottle’ to many of my patients as well.”

Now Lilian and Murdoch are kept busy answering e-mails from Professor Lawson’s pupils in California wanting to know more about the couple’s challenge to conventional wisdom about alcoholism.

And 61 year old Murdoch, once called “the grandfather of the PR profession in Scotland” can’t find enough hours in the day.

The purpose of the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle is to publicise its members, and to celebrate and promote the rich diversity of industry, commerce and business services available within the county boundaries of Ayrshire.

Members include the Clydesdale Bank, Ayr Racecourse and the Western House Hotel, and member company activities include building and construction, architectural practice, estate agency and land management, chartered accountancy, insurance broking, legal services, golf club management, a leading restaurant, CCTV surveillance provision, marketing services and brand creation, business coaching, web design and public relations consultancy.

The Elite Ayrshire Business Circle runs its own online news magazine, which can be found at http://www.ayrshirebusinessnews.com

As well as regularly updated illustrated articles about member companies, Ayrshire Business News also features rolling news, business and sports headlines, and its own online department store.

Only one member is allowed in any particular business sector, which greatly increases the effectiveness of networking opportunities within the Circle.

But one of the main advantages of membership is the Circle’s news distribution service.

Every member company is encouraged to issue one press release every month, and such is the effectiveness of the Circle’s news distribution service that the contents of these press releases regularly appear in Google News and other leading search engines within a couple of hours of issue.

One of the Elite Ayrshire Business Circle’s founder members is Willie Mackie. He says: “At launch we believed this was an important step in promoting businesses in Ayrshire. Our experience has confirmed this is a great vehicle for sharing success.”

Full service creative agency Paligap
wins Doig and Smith account

AWARD-winning Doig & Smith, one of the UK’s biggest and most successful construction consultancy practices, has appointed Ayr-based creative agency Paligap to take over its marketing communications strategy.

Established 70 years ago, Doig & Smith has expanded in size and in service provision, and now has branches in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London as well as many site branches in varied locations throughout the UK.

Today Doig & Smith is a fully integrated firm of Chartered Surveyors offering services and specialist skills including Quantity Surveying, Project Management, Facilities Management and Construction Law.

Its list of clients and portfolio of projects are impressive by any standard. Doig & Smith were involved in high profile projects such as the build of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s World Headquarters in Edinburgh, Heathrow’s new East Terminal and the redevelopment of Glasgow International Airport’s Terminal Building. Their other major clients include Scottish Media Group, Radisson Hotel Group, Edinburgh University, Goodrich Corporation and Rolls Royce.

Paligap has now been selected by Doig & Smith to take over the company’s design and marketing communications, and has been commissioned to roll out a new corporate identity for the company at the beginning of September. Work is already well underway, and senior partners at Doig and Smith have already given the thumbs-up to initial concepts.

Paligap’s remit will include redesigning all internal and external communications, advertising, exhibition management and the build of a new company website.

Paligap managing director Stephen Cosh commented: “We are delighted to win such a major contract, and look forward to a long relationship with Doig & Smith. Our role will be to ensure the development of the new Doig & Smith brand, and making sure that they retain their high profile across every platform. Being selected by yet another national company is further confirmation that you don’t have to be in the city to provide world- class solutions and service.”

Founded in 1999, Paligap has become one of Scotland’s premier full service marketing and creative agencies.

Paligap handle all elements of the communications mix covering branding, press, radio, TV and outdoor advertising, public relations and direct marketing, internet and print.

Paligap account director Graeme Niven said: “Our sole reason for existence is to boost our client’s business.

“Our proven track record has ensured that the agency has built up an impressive client list, which includes numerous organisations of all sizes and from every sector.”
